February Conditions at Ala Moana Beach
February Advisory Risk Moderate to High

Wet season storms flush contaminants through the Ala Wai Canal and urban drainage into Ala Moana's reef-protected lagoon. The lagoon's limited water exchange means bacteria can accumulate. Advisory risk is elevated during extended rain.

🌧️ Rainfall & Runoff

February brings 2-3 inches of rain to Honolulu. Kona storms can stall over the area bringing multi-day rainfall. The shallow lagoon behind the reef at Ala Moana has limited water exchange, meaning bacteria can accumulate after rain events.

🌊 Ocean Conditions

Winter conditions in the Ala Moana lagoon remain calm due to reef protection. Water temperature is 75-77°F. Occasional south swell wrap can create small waves on the outer reef. Trade wind chop affects exposed areas.

👥 Crowd Levels

High. Ala Moana is popular with both locals and tourists year-round. Holiday season adds tourist visitors but this beach is always busy with local families.

📌 February Notes
Humpback whale watching season is active. Whales are frequently visible from shore, especially on Maui's western and southern coasts. Peak whale activity is January through March.
Ala Moana Beach Park is the most popular park with Honolulu residents. The reef-protected lagoon is calm but has limited water exchange, meaning contaminants can accumulate. Avoid swimming near the Ala Wai Canal outfall on the Waikiki side of the park.
If It Looks Brown, Don't Swim
Never enter the ocean when the water appears brown or murky, even if no advisory is posted. Hawaii is often slow to test beaches and update advisories — not every beach is monitored. After heavy rain, wait at least 72 hours and until the water clears before swimming.

⚠️ The 72-Hour Rain Rule

The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. In february, this is especially important as wet-season storms can produce heavy rainfall and significant runoff.
