What to expect for water quality, rainfall, and ocean conditions

September Conditions at Ala Moana Beach
September Advisory Risk Low to Moderate

Dry season keeps urban runoff minimal. The lagoon water quality improves with less rainfall. However, the semi-enclosed lagoon always carries slightly higher baseline bacteria than open-coast beaches.

🌧️ Rainfall & Runoff

September remains dry but occasional tropical disturbances can bring brief rain. The lagoon's limited flushing means any sudden storm can cause a quick bacteria spike.

🌊 Ocean Conditions

The reef-protected lagoon at Ala Moana is calm and warm (79-80°F) in summer. Small south swells occasionally break on the outer reef but the inner lagoon stays flat. Conditions are ideal for families and casual swimming.

👥 Crowd Levels

Moderate to low. Fall shoulder season offers fewer tourists while conditions remain good. This is one of the best value periods for visiting Hawaii.

📌 September Notes
Ala Moana Beach Park is the most popular park with Honolulu residents. The reef-protected lagoon is calm but has limited water exchange, meaning contaminants can accumulate. Avoid swimming near the Ala Wai Canal outfall on the Waikiki side of the park.
Summer is the safest time for ocean swimming on most Oahu beaches, with smaller surf and fewer water quality advisories.
If It Looks Brown, Don't Swim
Never enter the ocean when the water appears brown or murky, even if no advisory is posted. Hawaii is often slow to test beaches and update advisories — not every beach is monitored. After heavy rain, wait at least 72 hours and until the water clears before swimming.

⚠️ The 72-Hour Rain Rule

The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. In september, rainfall is less frequent but individual storms can still produce contaminated runoff.
