Aulani Disney Resort, Ko Olina — ranked by water quality and bacteria risk

Drive times and water quality risk levels for beaches near Aulani Disney Resort, Ko Olina. Risk ratings are based on long-term DOH bacteria testing data and geography. Always check current Oʻahu advisories before swimming — conditions change after rain.

About Ko Olina and the Aulani Resort

The Aulani Disney Resort sits within the Ko Olina resort community on Oʻahu's leeward (west) coast, about 30 minutes from Waikiki and 20 minutes from the airport. Ko Olina is built around four man-made lagoons carved from the rocky coastline, each creating a crescent of calm, protected water that is ideal for young children and families.

The leeward coast receives far less rainfall than Honolulu or the windward side, making it one of the most reliably sunny beach areas on Oʻahu. The man-made lagoons solved the natural problem of this coast — the original shoreline was mostly sharp lava rock with limited sandy beach. Water quality in the lagoons is generally good, though the enclosed design means circulation is slower than open-ocean beaches.

Nearby Beaches — Ranked by Proximity
Ko Olina Lagoon 1 Moderate ●
The lagoon directly adjacent to the Aulani resort, with calm, shallow water protected by a rock breakwater on either side. The crescent shape creates a natural swimming pool that is gentle enough for toddlers while large enough for adults to float and paddle. Public access is available but parking fills early, especially on weekends and holidays
Walking
Adjacent
Ko Olina Lagoons 2-4 Moderate ●
The other three lagoons in the Ko Olina complex offer the same calm, protected swimming conditions as Lagoon 4 but with fewer crowds, particularly Lagoons 1 and 2 at the north end. Each lagoon has its own public parking area, restrooms, and shower facilities. The walking path connecting all four lagoons makes it easy to find the one with the most space
5-10 min walk
East along path
Electric Beach Low ●
A natural ocean area near the Ko Olina marina where warm water outflows attract spinner dolphins in the early morning and snorkelers throughout the day. The rocky coastline here is different from the man-made lagoons — you will need reef shoes and some ocean experience. The area is also a departure point for dolphin and snorkel boat tours
5 min
West
Makaha Beach Moderate ●
A wide, open beach on the leeward coast south of Ko Olina that draws local surfers and families from the nearby military communities. The beach sees real surf when west or south swells hit, and the lack of resort development gives it a more authentic, local feel. Facilities are basic compared to Ko Olina but the space and atmosphere more than compensate
20 min
Northwest
Ala Moana Beach Moderate ●
Ala Moana Beach Park offers a completely different experience from Ko Olina — a bustling urban beach in the heart of Honolulu with a huge calm lagoon, full facilities, and a location directly across from the largest open-air shopping center in the world. The drive east takes about 30 minutes via H-1 and provides a chance to combine beach and shopping

Getting Around

The four Ko Olina lagoons are all within walking distance of the Aulani resort via a paved coastal path. Each lagoon has its own public parking lot accessible from Aliʻinui Drive, but arrive before 9 AM on weekends as spaces fill quickly. For beaches outside Ko Olina, a rental car is necessary. The leeward coast beach south of the resort is about 10 minutes by car, while Ala Moana Beach Park is 30 minutes east on the H-1 freeway.

Best for young children: Ko Olina Lagoons (calm, shallow, protected). Best for snorkeling: Ko Olina marina area (dolphins, reef). Best for surfing: Leeward coast beaches (local surf, uncrowded). Most facilities: Ala Moana Beach Park (30-minute drive, urban beach).
