Aulani Disney Resort, Ko Olina — ranked by water quality and bacteria risk
The Aulani Disney Resort sits within the Ko Olina resort community on Oʻahu's leeward (west) coast, about 30 minutes from Waikiki and 20 minutes from the airport. Ko Olina is built around four man-made lagoons carved from the rocky coastline, each creating a crescent of calm, protected water that is ideal for young children and families.
The leeward coast receives far less rainfall than Honolulu or the windward side, making it one of the most reliably sunny beach areas on Oʻahu. The man-made lagoons solved the natural problem of this coast — the original shoreline was mostly sharp lava rock with limited sandy beach. Water quality in the lagoons is generally good, though the enclosed design means circulation is slower than open-ocean beaches.
The four Ko Olina lagoons are all within walking distance of the Aulani resort via a paved coastal path. Each lagoon has its own public parking lot accessible from Aliʻinui Drive, but arrive before 9 AM on weekends as spaces fill quickly. For beaches outside Ko Olina, a rental car is necessary. The leeward coast beach south of the resort is about 10 minutes by car, while Ala Moana Beach Park is 30 minutes east on the H-1 freeway.
Best for young children: Ko Olina Lagoons (calm, shallow, protected). Best for snorkeling: Ko Olina marina area (dolphins, reef). Best for surfing: Leeward coast beaches (local surf, uncrowded). Most facilities: Ala Moana Beach Park (30-minute drive, urban beach).
