Beaches Near Bishop Museum

Bishop Museum, Honolulu — ranked by water quality and bacteria risk

Drive times and water quality risk levels for beaches near Bishop Museum, Honolulu. Risk ratings are based on long-term DOH bacteria testing data and geography. Always check current Oʻahu advisories before swimming — conditions change after rain.

About the Bishop Museum Area

The Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum sits in the Kalihi neighborhood of Honolulu, about two miles inland from the nearest shoreline. Founded in 1889, the museum houses the world's largest collection of Polynesian cultural artifacts and natural history specimens. The surrounding Kalihi area is a residential neighborhood with local eateries and markets that most tourists never see. From the museum, several of Oʻahu's best-known beaches are a short drive south toward the coast. Traffic in metro Honolulu can be unpredictable, so plan extra time during morning and evening rush hours when heading to the beach after a museum visit.

Nearby Beaches — Ranked by Proximity
Ala Moana Beach Moderate ●
Ala Moana Beach Park is the largest urban beach in Hawaii, stretching half a mile along a protected reef-fringed lagoon. The calm, shallow water makes it popular with families and morning swimmers. Several streams drain into the channel behind the beach, contributing to moderate bacteria levels that tend to spike after rainfall.

South
Waikiki Beach Moderate ●
WaikÄ«kÄ« is Oʻahu's most famous beach strip, with a crescent of sand backed by high-rise hotels and Diamond Head in the distance. The beach is heavily managed with imported sand and frequent maintenance. Water quality varies along the two-mile stretch — sections near the Ala Wai Canal outlet tend to test higher for bacteria than the Diamond Head end.
15 min
Southeast
Kaimana Beach Low ●
Kaimana Beach (also called Sans Souci) sits at the quiet, Diamond Head end of Waikīkī, drawing a local crowd of lap swimmers and outrigger canoe paddlers. It is separated from the main Waikīkī strip and has no canal runoff nearby, which is why bacteria levels are consistently lower here. The Natatorium war memorial frames one end of the beach.
20 min
Southeast
Ko Olina Lagoons Moderate ●
Ko Olina's four crescent-shaped lagoons were carved from the rocky coastline to create calm, protected swimming areas. The man-made design means predictable wave conditions year-round, making them a popular choice for families with small children. Because they are enclosed, water circulation is limited, and DOH occasionally flags elevated bacteria levels in the innermost lagoons.
