Ewa Beach, Oʻahu — ranked by water quality and bacteria risk

Drive times and water quality risk levels for beaches near Ewa Beach, Oʻahu. Risk ratings are based on long-term DOH bacteria testing data and geography. Always check current Oʻahu advisories before swimming — conditions change after rain.

About ʻEwa Beach

ʻEwa Beach is a growing residential community on Oʻahu's leeward south shore, west of Pearl Harbor and Honolulu. The area has transformed from former sugarcane land into one of the island's largest planned developments, with new homes, schools, and shopping centers spreading toward the coast. The local beach is a low-key community spot with calm, shallow water and none of the tourist crowds found in Waikīkī. Nearby, the former military beach at White Plains offers some of the most consistent beginner-friendly surf on Oʻahu. The leeward location means less rainfall than the windward side, which generally keeps ocean water clearer.

Nearby Beaches — Ranked by Proximity
Ewa Beach Moderate ●
ʻEwa Beach is a community beach park on the south shore with calm, shallow water protected by an offshore reef. The beach draws local families on weekends for barbecues and casual swimming, and the atmosphere is distinctly residential rather than touristy. Stream runoff from the ʻEwa plain can push bacteria levels up after heavy rain, contributing to the moderate risk rating.

Ko Olina Lagoons Moderate ●
Ko Olina's four crescent-shaped lagoons were carved from rocky coastline to create calm, enclosed swimming areas with imported sand. The resort complex includes Disney's Aulani and the Four Seasons, with public access paths to each lagoon. Because the lagoons have limited water circulation, DOH occasionally flags elevated bacteria — check conditions after rain.

West
White Plains Beach Low ●
White Plains Beach, on the former Barbers Point Naval Air Station, is now open to the public and offers some of the best beginner surf breaks on Oʻahu. The beach has lifeguards, restrooms, and ample parking with far fewer crowds than Waikīkī. Water quality consistently tests well here because no streams discharge onto this stretch of coastline.
10 min
West
Ala Moana Beach Moderate ●
Ala Moana Beach Park is Honolulu's largest beach, stretching half a mile along a reef-protected lagoon. Morning swimmers, outrigger canoe paddlers, and joggers fill the park before the afternoon crowds arrive. Several streams drain into the channel behind the beach, which contributes to moderate bacteria levels after storms.
