Halekulani, Waikiki, Oʻahu — ranked by water quality and bacteria risk

Drive times and water quality risk levels for beaches near Halekulani, Waikiki, Oʻahu. Risk ratings are based on long-term DOH bacteria testing data and geography. Always check current Oʻahu advisories before swimming — conditions change after rain.

About the Halekulani Area

The Halekulani is one of Waikīkī's most iconic luxury hotels, set directly on the beach along the central section of the Waikīkī strip. The hotel's name means "house befitting heaven" in Hawaiian, and its beachfront location puts guests steps from the sand. The central Waikīkī location means quick walking access to multiple beach sections, but also proximity to the Ala Wai Canal outflow that affects water quality at the western end of the strip. Heading east toward Diamond Head generally leads to cleaner water, with Kaimana Beach at the far end testing consistently lower for bacteria. For the best snorkeling near Waikīkī, Hanauma Bay is a 20-minute drive east.

Nearby Beaches — Ranked by Proximity
Waikiki Beach Moderate ●
The beach directly in front of the Halekulani is part of the central Waikīkī strip, with soft imported sand and gentle waves from the offshore reef break. This section of beach is lively with surf lessons, catamaran rides, and beachgoers from the surrounding hotels. Water quality is moderate, influenced by the Ala Wai Canal's proximity and urban runoff from the Waikīkī drainage system.

Fort DeRussy Beach Moderate ●
Fort DeRussy Beach Park is a wider, less densely packed section of the Waikīkī shoreline fronting the military recreation area. The grassy park behind the beach offers shade, picnic areas, and room to spread out. Being slightly west of the main hotel strip, it sees fewer tourists but is still affected by the same urban water quality factors as central Waikīkī.
3 min walk
West
Kuhio Beach Moderate ●
Kūhiō Beach is a walled section of Waikīkī where concrete breakwaters create protected swimming lagoons popular with families and beginning swimmers. Lifeguards patrol daily, and a free hula show takes place at the beachside stage several evenings per week. The calm, enclosed water is pleasant, though the limited circulation means bacteria can accumulate.
5 min walk
East
Kaimana Beach Low ●
Kaimana Beach (Sans Souci) at the Diamond Head end of Waikīkī is a local favorite with consistently lower bacteria levels than the main tourist strip. Morning swimmers and outrigger paddlers frequent this small beach, which sits well east of the Ala Wai Canal influence. The New Otani Kaimana Beach Hotel's restaurant has tables practically on the sand.
15 min walk
East
Hanauma Bay Low ●
Hanauma Bay is Oʻahu's premier snorkeling destination, set in a protected volcanic crater with hundreds of tropical fish species. Online reservations and an entrance fee are required, and the park closes Mondays and Tuesdays for ecological recovery. The enclosed bay and lack of stream outlets produce consistently excellent water quality.

  • Trolley: The Waikīkī Trolley and several hotel shuttles run throughout the area, connecting to Ala Moana and beyond
  • Tip: For the cleanest dip near the hotel, walk 15 minutes east along the beach past the zoo to Kaimana Beach rather than swimming in front of the main strip
