Water quality status and swimming conditions
📍 Central Waikiki — Lifeguards on duty daily
Kuhio Beach Park is the heart of Waikiki — fronting some of the most visited shoreline in the world. The beach has two protected swimming areas (ponds) created by concrete breakwaters that calm the surf, making it excellent for beginners. However, its proximity to the Ala Wai Canal means post-rain water quality can be significantly elevated in bacteria.
On dry days and during extended dry periods, water quality is generally acceptable. The protected swimming ponds are popular with families and beginning surfers. Lifeguards are on duty every day. Duke Kahanamoku’s iconic statue stands at the edge of the beach — one of Waikiki’s most-photographed spots.
Based on: Ala Wai Canal proximity, urban runoff exposure, moderate ocean flushing
After heavy rain, stay out of all Waikiki beaches for at least 72 hours. The Ala Wai Canal — which drains the entire Manoa and Palolo valleys — empties near Kuhio Beach and can carry high bacteria loads during and after storms.
