About Kailua Town
Kailua is a vibrant windward town on Oʻahu's east coast, backed by the dramatic Koʻolau cliffs and fronted by some of the island's most beautiful beach water. The town center has an eclectic mix of boutiques, brunch spots, and outdoor outfitters that cater to both residents and visitors. Trade winds blow consistently here, which makes Kailua a hub for kiteboarding and windsurfing. The windward location brings more frequent rain showers than the south shore, but they tend to be brief and the beaches recover quickly. From Kailua you can access a string of exceptional windward beaches stretching south through Waimanalo, each quieter and less touristy than the last.
Nearby Beaches — Ranked by Proximity
Kailua Beach has appeared on dozens of national best-beach lists for its turquoise water, powdery white sand, and Mokulua Island views. Kayak and stand-up paddleboard rentals are available nearby, and the trade winds make this a favorite launch point for kiteboarding. The Enchanted Lake canal drains into the bay, contributing to moderate bacteria readings after heavy rain.
Lanikai Beach is accessed through narrow public walkways between beachfront homes in a quiet residential neighborhood. There are no restrooms, showers, or parking lots, which keeps crowds manageable despite the postcard-perfect turquoise water. Bacteria levels here are consistently low because no streams discharge anywhere near this section of coast.
Waimanalo Beach stretches over three miles, making it the longest continuous sand beach on Oʻahu. The wide, flat shoreline is backed by ironwood trees and rarely feels crowded even on holidays. Most visitors heading south from Kailua pass through Waimanalo on the scenic Kalanianaʻole Highway without stopping, which keeps the beach pleasantly uncrowded.
Bellows Beach is a military installation that opens to the public on weekends and federal holidays. The sheltered bay has gentle shore break perfect for beginner bodyboarders, and weekend camping permits are available. The ironwood-lined beach has a secluded, away-from-it-all feel that rewards the limited access schedule.
Hanauma Bay is Oʻahu's premier snorkeling destination, set in a volcanic crater that creates a protected, reef-filled cove. Advance reservations are required, and the park limits daily visitors to protect the coral ecosystem. The drive from Kailua goes over the Pali or through Hawaiʻi Kai and takes about 25 minutes.
Getting Around
Kailua is reached from Honolulu via the Pali Highway (Route 61), which tunnels through the Koʻolau Range in about 20 minutes. The H-3 freeway from Pearl Harbor is an alternate route.
- From Waikīkī: Take the Pali Highway over the mountains — about 25 minutes with light traffic, longer during rush hour
- Between beaches: Kailua, Lanikai, Waimanalo, and Bellows are all strung along the coast within a 15-minute drive of each other
- Parking: Kailua Beach Park has a large free lot that fills by mid-morning on weekends — Lanikai has almost no parking at all
- Tip: Rent kayaks from Kailua Beach and paddle to the Mokulua Islands (Mokes) for snorkeling and a beach picnic on Mokulua Nui
If Brown Water Is Active

- Wait 72 hours after rain stops before entering the water
- Avoid brown or murky water regardless of whether an advisory is posted
- Best rain-resistant option: Lanikai Beach (South of Kailua) — generally clearer after rain due to geography
