Beaches Near Kaneohe

Kaneohe, Oʻahu — ranked by water quality and bacteria risk

Drive times and water quality risk levels for beaches near Kaneohe, Oʻahu. Risk ratings are based on long-term DOH bacteria testing data and geography. Always check current Oʻahu advisories before swimming — conditions change after rain.

About Kaneʻohe

Kaneʻohe is a residential town on Oʻahu's windward (east) side, nestled between the dramatic Koʻolau cliffs and Kaneʻohe Bay. The bay itself is the largest sheltered body of water in Hawaii, dotted with patch reefs and the famous sandbar, but most of the shoreline is fringed by fishponds and shallow reef flats rather than sandy beaches.

For proper beach swimming, you will head either north along Kamehameha Highway toward Kualoa, or south over the Pali toward Kailua. Both directions offer strikingly different scenery along the windward coast. The windward side gets more rain than the leeward coast, which keeps the mountains lush and green but also means stream runoff after storms — check advisories before swimming.

A shallow sandbar in the middle of Kaneʻohe Bay, only reachable by boat or kayak. At low tide it rises above the surface creating a knee-deep wading area surrounded by turquoise water. Multiple tour operators run half-day trips.
