Beaches Near Moana Surfrider

Moana Surfrider, Waikiki — ranked by water quality and bacteria risk

Drive times and water quality risk levels for beaches near Moana Surfrider, Waikiki. Risk ratings are based on long-term DOH bacteria testing data and geography. Always check current Oʻahu advisories before swimming — conditions change after rain.

About the Moana Surfrider

The Moana Surfrider opened in 1901 as Waikiki's first hotel, earning its nickname "The First Lady of Waikiki." The white colonial-style building sits in the heart of Waikīkī between the Royal Hawaiian and the Honolulu Zoo end of the strip. Its beachfront banyan tree courtyard is one of the most photographed spots in the neighborhood. Being centrally located on the strip means several different beach sections are within easy walking distance, each with slightly different character and water quality conditions.

Nearby Beaches — Ranked by Proximity
Waikiki Beach Moderate ●
The stretch of sand directly in front of the Moana Surfrider is the classic Waikīkī Beach experience — surf lessons, outrigger canoe rides, and Diamond Head framing the view to the east. Water quality hovers at moderate due to the seawalls, groins, and high visitor volume that limit natural water circulation. Early mornings before 8 AM offer the calmest conditions and thinnest crowds.

Kuhio Beach Moderate ●
Just east of the Moana, Kuhio Beach has concrete seawalls that create protected wading pools popular with families and beginner swimmers. The enclosed sections can trap water and limit flushing, which is why bacteria levels sometimes test higher here than at more open stretches. Free hula shows take place at the beachside stage on most evenings.
3 min walk
East
Kaimana Beach Low ●
Also known as Sans Souci Beach, Kaimana sits at the quiet Diamond Head end of Waikīkī where the crowd thins out dramatically. The water here tests consistently cleaner than central Waikīkī thanks to better ocean circulation away from the seawalls. The Kaimana Beach Hotel restaurant is a popular post-swim brunch spot with direct beach views.
10 min walk
East
Fort DeRussy Beach Moderate ●
Walking west from the Moana past the Halekulani brings you to the widest section of sand in Waikīkī. Fort DeRussy's military park creates a buffer from development, leaving a more open, less commercialized beach. The added width and park setting make it one of the more comfortable spots to lay out a towel, though water quality testing shows moderate bacteria counts similar to central Waikīkī.
10 min walk
West
Ala Moana Beach Moderate ●
Oʻahu's most popular local beach park stretches along a man-made lagoon with calm, shallow water that rarely sees waves. The half-mile sandy shore backs up to a massive park with tennis courts, jogging paths, and the Ala Moana Center shopping mall across the street. It draws a much more local crowd than Waikīkī, especially on weekends when families stake out spots under the ironwood trees early.
