Royal Hawaiian, Waikiki — ranked by water quality and bacteria risk

About the Royal Hawaiian

The Royal Hawaiian, known as the "Pink Palace of the Pacific," has been a Waikīkī landmark since 1927. Its coral-pink Moorish architecture stands out against the glass towers of modern Honolulu, and its coconut-grove grounds occupy prime beachfront between the Moana Surfrider and the Sheraton Waikīkī. The hotel sits at the center of the Waikīkī beach strip, putting guests within easy walking distance of multiple beach sections with varying water quality — from the busier central stretches to the quieter, cleaner waters toward Diamond Head.

Nearby Beaches — Ranked by Proximity
The sand directly in front of the Pink Palace is one of the most sought-after spots on the strip, with pink beach umbrellas and cabanas creating an unmistakable scene. This section faces south and gets gentle waves ideal for beginner surfing and canoe rides. Water quality tests moderate due to the seawalls and high foot traffic that characterize central Waikīkī.

At the resort
Kuhio Beach Moderate ●
Concrete seawalls create protected wading areas at Kuhio Beach, making it popular with families and anyone who wants calmer water. Lifeguards are on duty year-round, and free torch-lighting and hula shows happen at the beachside stage most evenings. The enclosed lagoon areas can trap bacteria, so water quality here sometimes tests higher than the open beach stretches.

Fort DeRussy Beach Moderate ●
The widest section of sand in Waikīkī thanks to the military park behind it, Fort DeRussy is a short walk west from the Royal Hawaiian. It feels noticeably less commercial than the central strip, with more space to spread out. The open beach face allows better water circulation than the walled sections, though bacteria testing still shows moderate levels.
5 min walk
West
Kaimana Beach Low ●
At the quiet Diamond Head end of Waikīkī, Kaimana (Sans Souci) consistently tests as the cleanest water in the neighborhood. The beach is smaller and draws a more local crowd — morning lap swimmers and weekend picnic families. The walk from the Royal Hawaiian is pleasant, passing through Kapiʻolani Park with Diamond Head looming overhead.

East
Hanauma Bay Low ●
Oʻahu's premier snorkeling destination sits in a volcanic crater bay with crystal-clear water and abundant marine life. Online reservations are required and sell out days in advance — book early. A mandatory education video about reef preservation is shown before you descend to the beach. Water quality historically tests at low bacteria levels thanks to the bay's open-ocean flushing and distance from urban runoff.

Getting Around

The Royal Hawaiian is on Kalakaua Avenue in the heart of Waikīkī. All nearby beaches are walkable along the beachfront path, and Hanauma Bay is a short drive east.

  • On foot: The best way to beach-hop in Waikīkī — walk the shoreline path from Fort DeRussy to Kaimana in about 30 minutes
  • To Hanauma Bay: Drive east on Kalanianaʻole Highway (about 25 minutes) or take TheBus Route 22 from Waikīkī
  • Bikeshare: Biki stations are scattered every few blocks — a quick ride from the hotel to Kaimana Beach takes about 10 minutes
  • Tip: Reserve Hanauma Bay online at least a week ahead for weekend visits — walk-up availability is extremely limited
If Brown Water Is Active

After heavy rain, bacteria levels spike at beaches near streams and river mouths. If a brown water advisory is active near Royal Hawaiian, Waikiki:

  • Wait 72 hours after rain stops before entering the water
  • Avoid brown or murky water regardless of whether an advisory is posted
  • Best rain-resistant option: Kaimana Beach (East) — generally clearer after rain due to geography
  • Check the Oʻahu live advisories page for current conditions
