SEASONAL GUIDE

Best Winter Beaches in Hawaiʻi

December – March · Calm swimming when North Shore swells arrive

Why Winter Changes Everything

October through April, powerful North Pacific storms send massive swells to Hawaii’s north and west shores. This creates world-famous surf — but makes swimming extremely dangerous at beaches like Waimea Bay, Pipeline, and Sunset Beach. The solution: stick to south-facing beaches sheltered by the islands themselves.

Winter Swimming Tips
  • Always check surf reports before heading to any beach in winter

  • Humpback whale season Dec–Apr — look for spouts from shore
  • Winter brings more rain — wait 72 hours after heavy rain to swim
  • Even calm-looking beaches can have large wave sets in winter — watch for 20 minutes before entering
