Beach & water quality guide — which coast to visit, top beaches, and what to expect
The Kohala Coast is at its absolute best in summer — dry, calm, and warm. Kona Coast beaches are excellent with minimal rainfall. Even the Hilo side gets somewhat drier, though it still receives more rain than the west side. Summer brings the calmest ocean conditions island-wide, making it ideal for snorkeling at Captain Cook and Two Step.
These beaches have elevated risk factors this month. Check current conditions before you go.
The Big Island has the most dramatic weather variation of any Hawaiian island. The Kohala and Kona coasts recover within 24 hours because they get so little rain. The Hilo side can take 72+ hours and receives 10x more rainfall. Rainy-day alternatives: Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park (lava tubes are underground), Kona coffee farm tours, Mauna Kea summit (above the clouds), Hilo Farmers Market.
The Big Island celebrates Lei Day and Kamehameha Day with parades in Kailua-Kona and Hilo. October brings the Ironman World Championship and the start of whale season. Spring brings excellent conditions on the Kohala Coast.
