Water quality status and bacteria risk rating
📍 Kihei, South Maui — Quiet local beach between Kamaole I & II
Charley Young Beach is a small, sheltered cove in Kihei on Maui’s sunny south shore. South Maui’s leeward location means significantly less rainfall and runoff than windward beaches. The cove’s calm, protected waters and low development density nearby contribute to generally excellent water quality.
The beach is beloved by locals as a quiet alternative to the crowded Kamaole parks. The rocky edges offer good snorkeling with tropical fish and occasional sea turtle sightings. No lifeguards are present, but the calm conditions make it suitable for confident swimmers.
Based on: Leeward location, low rainfall area, minimal stream runoff, sheltered cove
The Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. Even in dry south Kihei, storm runoff from nearby roads and development can temporarily spike bacteria levels.
