The Story Behind the Name

There is no Disney Beach in Hawaii. At least, not officially. What happened is simple: Disney built Aulani, a Resort and Spa, at Ko Olina on Oʻahu's west side, and it fronts the second of four man-made lagoons in the Ko Olina resort complex. Tourists staying at Aulani started calling it "Disney Beach," and the name spread through social media, travel blogs, and word of mouth.

The lagoon's official designation is Ko Olina Lagoon 2, also given the Hawaiian name Kohola Lagoon (kohola means whale). Disney does not own the lagoon or the beach. Under Hawaii law, all beaches are public, and anyone can access and use the lagoons regardless of whether they are hotel guests.

This naming quirk matters for water quality. If you search DOH advisories for "Disney Beach," you will find nothing. You need to search for "Ko Olina" to find relevant water quality data.

Water Quality

The Ko Olina lagoons have moderate bacteria risk (2 out of 5). They are man-made lagoons with engineered breakwaters that block wave action and create calm, family-friendly swimming conditions. The lagoons self-clean through tidal exchange with the open ocean.

The west side of Oʻahu is dry, which reduces runoff risk. Water quality is generally good, making the lagoons popular with families with young children. All four lagoons share similar water quality profiles.
