Water Safety for Dogs in Hawaii

The same water quality rules that protect humans apply to your dog. Dogs are more likely to ingest ocean water while swimming, making bacteria and contamination risks even more relevant.

  • 72-Hour Rain Rule: Avoid letting your dog swim for 72 hours after heavy rain
  • Brown Water: If the water looks brown or murky, keep your dog out
  • Streams: Never let your dog drink from or swim in Hawaiian freshwater streams — leptospirosis risk is real
  • Blue-Green Algae: Avoid any water with blue-green or green scum — can be fatal to dogs
  • Rinse: Always rinse your dog with fresh water after ocean swimming

Always verify water quality with the Hawaii DOH Clean Water Branch before swimming.

When in doubt, don't go out. 🤙
