Transitional months see variable rainfall. The Ala Wai Canal can still discharge contaminated runoff during individual storm events. Monitor conditions after rain.
November sees a significant increase in rainfall, averaging 2.5-3 inches. Kona storms become more frequent. Ala Wai Canal discharge events increase and water quality advisories become more common.
Fall brings transitional conditions. South-shore surf is generally small. Occasional early-season south swells appear. Water temperature begins cooling from around 79°F toward winter levels.
Moderate. Late fall brings fewer visitors before the holiday rush begins.
The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. In november, this is especially important as wet-season storms can produce heavy rainfall and significant runoff.
