Heavy winter rain increases Waimea River discharge. Combined with dangerous surf, Waimea Bay is not recommended for swimming during the winter wet season.
January at Waimea Bay is defined by massive winter swells. The bay sees some of the largest waves in the world, regularly exceeding 30-foot faces. Swimming is extremely dangerous when the surf is up. The Waimea River can discharge bacteria-laden runoff during heavy rain.
Winter brings massive north swells to Waimea Bay, some of the largest rideable waves on Earth. The bay is closed to swimming during big surf events. Powerful currents and shore break make the water extremely dangerous.
Extremely high. December through February is peak tourist season driven by holiday travel and mainland winter escapes. Book accommodations and tours well in advance.
The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. In january, this is especially important as wet-season storms can produce heavy rainfall and significant runoff.
