Pearl Harbor / Arizona Memorial, Oʻahu — ranked by water quality and bacteria risk

Drive times and water quality risk levels for beaches near Pearl Harbor / Arizona Memorial, Oʻahu. Risk ratings are based on long-term DOH bacteria testing data and geography. Always check current Oʻahu advisories before swimming — conditions change after rain.

About Pearl Harbor

Pearl Harbor is one of the most visited historical sites in Hawaii, drawing visitors to the USS Arizona Memorial, the Battleship Missouri, and the Pacific Aviation Museum on Ford Island. The military complex sits on the shores of a large natural harbor on Oʻahu's south coast, roughly midway between downtown Honolulu and the leeward (west) coast.

There are no swimming beaches at Pearl Harbor itself — the harbor is an active military installation. But the central location makes it easy to reach beaches in several directions after a morning at the memorials. The nearest large beach is Ala Moana, about 20 minutes east toward Honolulu, while the calm man-made lagoons of Ko Olina are about 25 minutes west. Water quality varies significantly between options, so checking conditions before choosing is worthwhile.

Nearby Beaches — Ranked by Proximity
Ala Moana Beach Moderate ●
The largest beach park in Honolulu, with a half-mile stretch of sand, a man-made reef that creates a calm lagoon for swimming, and full facilities including lifeguards, restrooms, and concessions. It is heavily used by local residents and significantly less touristy than Waikiki. The beach is a short drive east on the H-1 freeway from Pearl Harbor
15 min
East
Ko Olina Lagoons Moderate ●
A series of four man-made crescent lagoons carved from the rocky leeward coast, each with calm, protected water ideal for families with young children. The lagoons are part of a resort community that includes the Aulani Disney Resort, shops, and restaurants. Public access and parking are available at each lagoon, though spaces fill early on weekends
20 min
West
Ewa Beach Moderate ●
A public beach park in the Ewa Beach neighborhood, popular with military families from the nearby bases. The beach is broad and sandy, with a gradual slope and typically calm water. It has a strong local, residential character and is less maintained than the resort or park beaches, but parking is ample and crowds are light
10 min
Southwest
Waikiki Beach Moderate ●
The world's most recognizable beach, stretching a mile along the Honolulu coast with gentle waves, warm water, and the silhouette of Diamond Head in the background. The section nearest the hotels is densely packed with tourists, but the beach is still a quintessential Hawaii experience. Water quality varies along the strip, particularly near the Ala Wai Canal outlet
25 min
Southeast
Kailua Beach Moderate ●
A world-class snorkeling bay set in a volcanic crater on Oʻahu's southeast coast, with exceptional coral reef and consistently excellent water quality. Reservations are required, and the daily visitor cap keeps the experience manageable. The drive from Pearl Harbor takes about 30 minutes via H-1 East and Kalanianaole Highway
