April Conditions at Kalapaki Beach
April Advisory Risk Moderate to High

Kalapaki Beach faces year-round bacteria challenges from Nawiliwili Stream and harbor proximity. Transition months bring variable conditions. Always avoid the stream mouth area.

🌧️ Rainfall & Runoff

April brings about 3 inches of rain to the east side. Conditions begin improving as storm frequency decreases, but Nawiliwili Stream continues carrying baseline bacteria loads. The harbor influence persists year-round.

🌊 Ocean Conditions

Winter north swells wrap into Nawiliwili Bay, creating surfable waves at Kalapaki. The inner bay stays calmer but winter surf can make the outer beach areas rough. Water temperature is around 75-77°F.

👥 Crowd Levels

Moderate. The shoulder season between spring break and summer offers a good balance of pleasant weather and manageable crowds.

📌 April Notes
Humpback whale watching season is active. Whales are frequently visible from shore, especially on Maui's western and southern coasts. Peak whale activity is January through March.
Nawiliwili Stream at Kalapaki Beach has a 100% bacteria failure rate in DOH water quality testing. Avoid swimming near the stream mouth, especially after rain. The beach is adjacent to Nawiliwili Harbor, which adds boat-related contamination.
If It Looks Brown, Don't Swim
Never enter the ocean when the water appears brown or murky, even if no advisory is posted. Hawaii is often slow to test beaches and update advisories — not every beach is monitored. After heavy rain, wait at least 72 hours and until the water clears before swimming.

⚠️ The 72-Hour Rain Rule

The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. In april, rainfall is less frequent but individual storms can still produce contaminated runoff.
