What to expect for water quality, rainfall, and ocean conditions
Kalapaki Beach has high bacteria risk during the wet season. Nawiliwili Stream has a 100% bacteria failure rate in DOH testing. Heavy rain produces massive contaminated discharge from the stream and harbor runoff. Avoid swimming near the stream mouth.
February continues heavy east-side Kauai rainfall. Nawiliwili Stream continuously discharges bacteria-laden water at the beach. Every major rain event pushes additional contaminated runoff from upstream development past Kalapaki.
Winter north swells wrap into Nawiliwili Bay, creating surfable waves at Kalapaki. The inner bay stays calmer but winter surf can make the outer beach areas rough. Water temperature is around 75-77°F.
Extremely high. December through February is peak tourist season driven by holiday travel and mainland winter escapes. Book accommodations and tours well in advance.
The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. In february, this is especially important as wet-season storms can produce heavy rainfall and significant runoff.
