May starts the drier season for east Kauai with about 2 inches of rain. Stream discharge decreases but Nawiliwili Stream still carries bacteria. Kalapaki water quality is better than winter but never as clean as isolated beaches.
Transitional conditions at Kalapaki are generally calm. The sheltered bay provides good protection from most swells. Water temperature is moderate. The harbor breakwater blocks the worst of trade wind chop.
