The South Shore (Poʻipū) is by far the best winter swimming area on Kauaʻi — it’s the driest coast and stays relatively calm. The North Shore (Hanalei, Tunnels Beach) gets pounded by massive winter surf and heavy rainfall — Hanalei Bay can see 20+ foot waves. The East Side (Kapaʻa, Līhuʻe) gets moderate rain. Note: Kauaʻi’s North Shore gets 5–10x more rainfall than the South Shore.
