Water quality status and conditions guide
📍 North Shore Oʻahu, near Turtle Bay — Secluded & calm
Kawela Bay has good water quality overall. The sheltered bay receives good ocean flushing, and the surrounding area has limited development. A small stream drains into the bay and can temporarily affect quality after rainfall.
Stay out of the ocean for 72 hours after heavy rain. The stream draining into Kawela Bay can carry bacteria after significant rainfall on the North Shore.
Kawela Bay is one of Oʻahu's most tranquil North Shore beaches. Unlike the famous surf breaks nearby, Kawela Bay faces slightly east of north and is partially sheltered by Kahuku Point, giving it calmer conditions than Sunset Beach or Pipeline much of the year.
The bay is a favorite for locals seeking a quieter beach experience. The old banyan trees lining the shore provide shade rarely found on North Shore beaches. Sea turtles are common, and the snorkeling along the rocky points is rewarding.
