Data-driven beach plan with water quality checks
| Duration | 2 week |
| Island | Oʻahu |
| Beaches | 10 beaches covered |
| Best For | All experience levels |
Two weeks gives you time to explore Waikiki’s distinct sections. The area near Queen’s Surf Beach on the east end offers quieter water and snorkeling along the sea wall. Fort DeRussy Beach at the west end has more open sand. The Ala Wai Canal mouth nearby can elevate bacteria after rain — check the Waikiki page before entering.
Combine both in one windward day trip. Start early at Lanikai (no facilities) for uncrowded powder sand, then shift to Kailua Beach Park by 10 AM for lifeguards and kayak rentals. The two-week window means you can return on a calmer day if conditions are choppy.
Oʻahu’s premier snorkeling spot in a volcanic crater. Reservations fill days in advance. The deeper right side of the bay has larger fish and better visibility. Closed Tuesdays. If your first visit has murky water, you have time to rebook on a clearer day.
Four protected man-made lagoons on the leeward coast where conditions never change. Lagoon 4 is least crowded. Lagoon 2 has the best snorkeling along the rock walls. Free parking. A reliable backup on any day when other beaches have rough conditions.
Ala Moana is a local favorite with reef-protected water and Magic Island lagoon for kids. The North Shore requires a full day — 45 min drive each way. Summer brings calm swimming at Sunset Beach and Waimea Bay. Winter transforms them into world-class surf spots. With two weeks, you can time a North Shore trip around favorable conditions rather than forcing it.
| Car vs transit | For 2 weeks, a rental car saves money over daily rideshares. TheBus ($5.50 day pass) covers Waikiki → Kailua and Waikiki → Ala Moana well |
| Waikiki to Kailua | 30 min via Pali Hwy. Free lot fills by 10 AM weekends |
| Hanauma Bay | 20 min east. $3 parking. Reserve online at hanaumabaystatepark.com |
| Ko Olina | 35 min via H-1 West. Free lots at each lagoon |
| North Shore | 45–60 min via H-2. Free roadside parking. Plan for Saturday morning traffic |
