May Conditions at Sunset Beach
May Advisory Risk Very Low

Sunset Beach has excellent water quality during the dry season. Minimal runoff and no significant stream discharge. Summer swimming conditions are ideal.

🌧️ Rainfall & Runoff

May brings calm conditions to Sunset Beach. The dramatic transformation from winter begins: sand returns, the shore break calms, and the beach becomes a wide, gentle swimming area. Water quality is excellent.

🌊 Ocean Conditions

Summer transforms Sunset Beach into a wide, calm swimming area. The ocean is flat (79-80°F), the beach is wide with soft sand, and conditions are ideal for families. A dramatic contrast from winter's massive surf.

👥 Crowd Levels

Moderate. The shoulder season between spring break and summer offers a good balance of pleasant weather and manageable crowds.

📌 May Notes
In summer, Sunset Beach transforms into a wide, calm swimming beach. The dramatic seasonal change is one of the most remarkable beach transformations in Hawaii. Summer sand fills the beach to its maximum width.
If It Looks Brown, Don't Swim
Never enter the ocean when the water appears brown or murky, even if no advisory is posted. Hawaii is often slow to test beaches and update advisories — not every beach is monitored. After heavy rain, wait at least 72 hours and until the water clears before swimming.

⚠️ The 72-Hour Rain Rule

The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. In may, rainfall is less frequent but individual storms can still produce contaminated runoff.
