October marks the return of north swells to Sunset Beach. Early-season swells can arrive suddenly. The beach begins losing sand as wave energy increases. Swimming becomes progressively more dangerous.
Winter north swells create massive waves at Sunset Beach, one of the world's most famous big wave surf breaks. Waves regularly exceed 15-20 foot faces. Swimming is extremely dangerous. Strong longshore currents develop. The beach loses sand, exposing reef.
Moderate to low. Fall shoulder season offers fewer tourists while conditions remain good. This is one of the best value periods for visiting Hawaii.
The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. In october, this is especially important as wet-season storms can produce heavy rainfall and significant runoff.
