April Conditions at Waimea Bay
April Advisory Risk Low

Dry conditions and calm seas make Waimea Bay an excellent swimming destination. Waimea River discharge is minimal. Water quality is good.

🌧️ Rainfall & Runoff

April marks the transition to summer conditions at Waimea Bay. North swells decrease significantly. The bay starts becoming swimmable on calm days. Water quality improves as Waimea River discharge decreases with less rain.

🌊 Ocean Conditions

Winter brings massive north swells to Waimea Bay, some of the largest rideable waves on Earth. The bay is closed to swimming during big surf events. Powerful currents and shore break make the water extremely dangerous.

👥 Crowd Levels

Moderate. The shoulder season between spring break and summer offers a good balance of pleasant weather and manageable crowds.

📌 April Notes
Humpback whale watching season is active. Whales are frequently visible from shore, especially on Maui's western and southern coasts. Peak whale activity is January through March.
Waimea Bay is a world-famous big wave surf spot in winter. The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational may run between December and February when waves reach 30+ foot faces. Never enter the water during large surf events.
If It Looks Brown, Don't Swim
Never enter the ocean when the water appears brown or murky, even if no advisory is posted. Hawaii is often slow to test beaches and update advisories — not every beach is monitored. After heavy rain, wait at least 72 hours and until the water clears before swimming.

⚠️ The 72-Hour Rain Rule

The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. In april, rainfall is less frequent but individual storms can still produce contaminated runoff.
