March Conditions at Waimea Bay
March Advisory Risk Moderate to High

Heavy winter rain increases Waimea River discharge. Combined with dangerous surf, Waimea Bay is not recommended for swimming during the winter wet season.

🌧️ Rainfall & Runoff

March brings the last of the major winter swells to Waimea Bay. The bay alternates between large surf days and increasingly calm periods. Rainfall begins decreasing. Late-season storms can still bring big waves.

🌊 Ocean Conditions

Winter brings massive north swells to Waimea Bay, some of the largest rideable waves on Earth. The bay is closed to swimming during big surf events. Powerful currents and shore break make the water extremely dangerous.

👥 Crowd Levels

Very high. March is spring break season with families and college students. Popular beaches fill early in the morning.

📌 March Notes
Humpback whale watching season is active. Whales are frequently visible from shore, especially on Maui's western and southern coasts. Peak whale activity is January through March.
Waimea Bay is a world-famous big wave surf spot in winter. The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational may run between December and February when waves reach 30+ foot faces. Never enter the water during large surf events.
If It Looks Brown, Don't Swim
Never enter the ocean when the water appears brown or murky, even if no advisory is posted. Hawaii is often slow to test beaches and update advisories — not every beach is monitored. After heavy rain, wait at least 72 hours and until the water clears before swimming.

⚠️ The 72-Hour Rain Rule

The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. In march, this is especially important as wet-season storms can produce heavy rainfall and significant runoff.
