May Conditions at Waimea Bay
May Advisory Risk Low

Dry conditions and calm seas make Waimea Bay an excellent swimming destination. Waimea River discharge is minimal. Water quality is good.

🌧️ Rainfall & Runoff

May brings calm conditions to Waimea Bay. The bay transforms from a dangerous winter surf spot into a calm swimming lagoon. North swells are rare. Water quality is good with reduced rainfall.

🌊 Ocean Conditions

Summer transforms Waimea Bay into a calm swimming lagoon. The water is flat, clear, and warm (79-80°F). The famous jumping rock draws crowds. Snorkeling is possible along the rocky north side of the bay.

👥 Crowd Levels

Moderate. The shoulder season between spring break and summer offers a good balance of pleasant weather and manageable crowds.

📌 May Notes
In summer, Waimea Bay's calm waters make the famous jumping rock a popular activity. The rock sits about 25 feet above the water. Jump at your own risk and check depth conditions.
If It Looks Brown, Don't Swim
Never enter the ocean when the water appears brown or murky, even if no advisory is posted. Hawaii is often slow to test beaches and update advisories — not every beach is monitored. After heavy rain, wait at least 72 hours and until the water clears before swimming.

⚠️ The 72-Hour Rain Rule

The Hawaii Department of Health recommends staying out of the ocean for at least 72 hours after heavy rain. In may, rainfall is less frequent but individual storms can still produce contaminated runoff.
