Waikiki, Oʻahu — ranked by water quality and bacteria risk

About Waikīkī

Waikīkī is Hawaii's most famous tourist district, a two-mile strip of sand backed by high-rise hotels with Diamond Head as the backdrop. Over 70,000 visitors stay in Waikīkī on any given night, making it one of the most densely packed resort areas in the world. The main Waikīkī Beach is heavily managed with imported sand and regular grooming. The Ala Wai Canal, built in the 1920s to drain the former wetlands behind Waikīkī, empties into the ocean at the west end of the strip and is the primary source of elevated bacteria during and after rain. For cleaner water, head east toward Kaimana Beach at the Diamond Head end, or drive to Hanauma Bay for snorkeling in a protected volcanic crater.

Nearby Beaches — Ranked by Proximity
Ala Moana Beach Moderate ●
Ala Moana Beach Park sits just west of Waikīkī and is where Honolulu residents go for their daily swim. A half-mile reef-protected lagoon keeps the water calm and accessible for all ages. Multiple streams drain into the channel behind the beach, contributing to moderate bacteria readings that tend to spike after heavy rain.

West
Hanauma Bay Low ●
Hanauma Bay is Oʻahu's premier snorkeling destination, a protected volcanic crater filled with coral reef and hundreds of tropical fish species. An online reservation and entrance fee are required, and the park caps daily visitors to protect the ecosystem. The enclosed bay shape and absence of stream outlets keep water quality consistently excellent.

East
Kaimana Beach Low ●
Kaimana Beach (Sans Souci) sits at the quiet, Diamond Head end of the Waikīkī strip, drawing a local crowd of lap swimmers and outrigger canoe paddlers. It is well separated from the Ala Wai Canal outflow, which is why bacteria levels here are noticeably lower than the main Waikīkī sections. The adjacent New Otani Kaimana Beach Hotel has a popular restaurant with tables on the sand.
5 min walk
East end of Waikiki
Diamond Head Beach Park wraps around the base of the Diamond Head crater with a rocky shoreline that creates excellent tide pools at low water. This is not a sand beach and the entry can be tricky over the reef, but the water clarity and marine life reward adventurous swimmers and snorkelers. No stream runoff reaches this exposed headland.
10 min
Southeast
Ko Olina Lagoons Moderate ●
Ko Olina's four crescent-shaped lagoons on the leeward coast offer enclosed, calm swimming areas far from the Waikīkī crowds. The resort complex is open to the public via designated access paths, and the consistent flat-water conditions make them ideal for families with small children. The 30-minute drive from Waikīkī is worth it for a change of pace.
35 min
West
Kailua Beach Moderate ●
Kailua Beach on the windward coast has turquoise water, fine white sand, and Mokulua Island views that have landed it on countless best-beach lists. The drive from Waikīkī over the Pali Highway takes about 25 minutes. Kayak and paddleboard rentals are available for exploring the offshore islands.
